Next Generation Firewalls: Should You Invest?

Internet and network security is field that changes constantly because network risks or security risks also evolve over time. As a business, you could already have systems in place for your much-needed security. In line with that need, Firewalls are at the core of security solutions for your business. The question, however, is whether your firewalls evolve as deftly as the security risks and threats do? Is it time for you to consider Next generation firewalls for better IT management and enhanced security for your business? Let’s find out:

Next generation firewalls are popular

According to a recent survey by Techtarget.com – a digital publisher specializer specializing in publishing all things technology – over 69% of respondents claim that they are looking to invest in Next Generation Firewalls as they have sensed a growing need for the same. They expressed dissatisfaction over the plain port and protocol based approach that traditional firewalls take. More than half the respondents also needed firewalls incorporate features such as user identity management, intrusion prevention, and many other such features.

You might just not be ready yet

Next generation firewalls are a new trend. Albeit growing in popular demand, vendors and channel partners might not be serving next generation firewalls on a platter, so to speak. Very few vendors deliver these solutions currently. Large enterprises have been quick to discern a strong need for intelligent, application-aware firewalls. But large companies also have enough manpower and help at hand to drift to a new, robust, capable solution unlike small businesses, which might not know (and might not need) such solutions right away.

Application-aware? Really?

Since next generation firewalls are relatively new, it’s unclear whether they are really that nimble, smart, and efficient systems after all. On the other hand, they could prove to be worth the investment, after all. Most of these firewall applications in their new avatar come with intrusion prevention that helps businesses combat malware attacks that come in through social media, for instance. These firewalls also help prevent website hacking thanks to encryption.

Next generation firewalls might not replace what you have now

Much like a software update or a free replacement of old hardware, next generation firewalls might mean a mere extension of the products you already invested in. In some cases, some of the software or the hardware might need to be shown the door but more often, it’s not. Next generation firewalls could be a gradual evolution of the present-day firewall products. The future, we always like to believe, is always about consolidation. Network security will have next generation firewalls as a consolidated part and not as a standalone product.

What’s your opinion on next-generation firewalls? Do you they make sense for businesses?
