Myth 1: Your vendor will provide cloud security
You are in big trouble if you feel every cloud network is safe. A lot of businesses feel that the responsibility of the cloud's security lies with the vendor. IT security analyst Dominic Vogel feels the responsibility of your business' security is yours. Therefore, when you decide to move your business to the cloud, make sure you evaluate your vendor's security. Since security is a concern, do discuss it with your vendor in detail. Do not assume that they would take care of it without any inputs from you. Tell them what you want, and work with them to get it.
Myth 2: Compliance means security
Ordinarily, this would ring true. However, compliance may not always mean security. It would be a mistake to believe that compliance equals security. In fact, compliance means that the cloud is secure at a specific point in time. Equating the two means putting your business and your data at risk because there may be weak points in your security shield.
Myth 3: Private cloud computing is secure by default
This is certainly a lie. The foundation of the cloud computing technology is based on a hypervisor. Virtual machines present on a single server can communicate with each other using information packets. This means malicious information sent to one system can compromise all other devices on the server. If you do not have enough security measures in place, your cloud network can be very detrimental to your business' data.
Myth 4: Security of public cloud rests with Cloud Security Policy
Failing to take application level security measures can harm the security of your business. Public clouds do take compliance seriously, but compromising on security and not taking precautions exposes your data to a host of potential threats and risks. To construct a secure application environment, use your security groups properly.
Myth 5: Larger Organizations are More Secure On the Cloud
This is by far the bizarrest of notions. The fact is, the larger an organization, the more surface area it has for security attacks. Larger organizations may have some procedures and security protocols in place. However, this certainly doesn't mean the larger an organization, more secure it is. Social engineering attacks are the most common, so large organizations should particularly protect themselves from such threats.
