When businesses don’t back up data, they fall right into the pit. Enough said. Are you on the cloud yet? Do you backup data regularly? What kind of data backup protocols, systems, processes, and tools do you use?
It’s not hyperbole; it’s the truth. In spite of an overwhelming evidence of fortunes lost, the trend continues.
According to a GFI Whitepaper on Business Implications of Not Having a Backup that points to a Rubicon Consulting Survey, SME (Small and Medium Enterprises) rated backup as one of their highest priorities. Yet, 33% of these companies do nothing to backup their data.
If it isn’t lack of initiative, the industry has plenty of half-initiatives, so to speak. According to the Rubicon Consulting Survey above, 92% of the companies have some sort of backup system in place, which didn’t stop more than 50% of these companies from losing data. How does that affect companies? Of the companies that lost data, 33% lost sales opportunities, 20% lost customers, and 25% of these companies reported severe disruptions due to data loss.
In a Vanson Bourne Survey with 650 companies in Europe and U.S, more than 66% of the companies surveyed revealed that they would still have to increase the amount of data stored using hybrid storage on the cloud by the year 2015. 66% of respondents also stated that improved data security was their primary reason why they preferred hybrid storage and backup on the cloud. Further, at least 24% of executives revealed that they don’t store or backup all critical files.
All of this when a pre-dated survey back in 2011 stated that more than 31% of organizations suffer data losses within a year, twice on an average. As of 2012, the percentage of companies experiencing data loss rose to 53% -- a reason good enough for companies to scramble for data storage and backup.
You could attribute complacency, misdirected optimism, and nonchalance as possible reasons why small and medium businesses don’t backup their data. Some companies rely on employees to backup their own files, and many businesses do not have any regular data backup plan in place. Of those companies that certainly do backups regularly, they do it “onsite” – which is just as good as your capability to recover or restore data.
So, what happens when you don’t backup data for your business? According to a Source Path Consulting release, the National Archives & Records Administration in Washington has some revealing statistics: more than 93% business filed for bankruptcy within a year of a data loss disaster. Another Richmond House Group study states that 20% of small and medium-sized businesses will suffer a data loss every 5 years.
