40 GbE (Gigabit Ethernet): Is It the Next Best Thing after 10 GbE network?

Technology moves faster than the rate at which we blog, or sometimes we think so. In the not so distant past, we wrote about 10GbE (10 Gigabit Ethernet) as the next destination for networks to reach. We heralded it as the future of networks and as the answer to the ever-increasing demand on networks to handle the deluge of cascading, inbound (and outbound) chunks of “big data”. We now have the 40 GbE networks, which are poised to be the new bar. We predict that it’s going to be in place in the next 6 years or so.

Interestingly, the adoption of 10GbE networks will, in itself, feed the need for the super-loaded 40 GbE networks. For instance, if you upgrade to a 10GbE network, you will servers that are just as fuelled, locked, and loaded. This will force companies to move to a 40 Gigabit Ethernet Network for its data center networks to meet the demands of the bandwidths that the networks will be hungry for.

The vendors, of course, are quick to spot the opportunity. Cisco has already announced its new 40 GbE switch, which incidentally allows for a seamless transition from 10 GbE network. Another notable mention of new 40 GbE compatible products include BlackDiamond X8 from Extreme Networks.

While the costs remains as variable as it can get since not too many vendors have come up with their compatible network products, the business case for 40GbE seems to be as compelling as it can get. Design flexibility, broader range of applications, higher bandwidth, and phenomenal speeds of data transfer are all reasons why companies will consider 40GbE networks.

Of course, new cabling standards, higher costs associated to first movers could be some of the glitches businesses will have to bear with for now. Yet, the fact that their present networks can be upgraded to a 10GbE network coupled with the possibility of upgrading further to a 40GbE network based on the same infrastructure – with a just a little touches or tweaks is indeed a compelling prospect to consider.

Setting up, upgrading, and managing networks is a full-time job; it’s best left to the experts. At Network Pro, it’s our bread and butter. This exactly what we do –among others. Do let us know if you need help and we’ll be glad to extend our hands.

Is 10 GbE network finally a thing of the past even before it could settle into the present? Will 40 GbE networks change the way we do business?
