Standing at the threshold of 2011, strides in technology development show no sign of slowing down. Numerous tools are going to be made available for small and medium businesses and entrepreneurs, individual professionals, small and large companies alike are going to have a lot to look forward to. So, why not take some New Year resolutions on the eve of yet another promising year?

Windows or No Windows: Choose Wisely

While there’s no denying that Windows is too big to notice, issues like Windows admitting to serious security flaws in its Internet Explorer browser, for instance, have made it stand alone in an arena with blood-thirsty warriors ( read competitors) rapidly rushing in to fill in the gap.

There was Mozilla Firefox, Opera and then Google Chrome. While Christopher Null[1] does point out that 2011 will have you all primed up for Windows 8, will the Internet Explorer see a gradual, bed-ridden, infected death? Or will it rise from the ashes? While this remains uncertain and whether Windows 8 will floor us with an awesome browser only time will tell. Professionals and companies should now look to espouse a variety of browsers now available in the market. Make it a resolution or at least give it a try – for the sake of data security, if nothing else.

The world is now mobile; your company will be dragged into it: Prepare

A company won’t be judge by its sheer size or location spread anymore; those days are over. Telecommuting has come of age and the surge of smart phones, mobile devices like the iPad and the various competing tablet like devices, net books, etc., have made one thing clear: the future of work is through devices like these. You may add the powerful benefits off VoIP to it[2].

Is your company geared up to handle this change? Are your networks primed up and capable of shouldering this additional, extended weight? Are you making a big deal about mobile security and network security yet?

Content on the Internet enters adolescence – wild and rebellious: Diversify Content

Content isn’t just text anymore. Anything published online now has to have video elements and a certain strategy to leverage social media. As if that wasn’t enough, the need for interactive PDF documents, downloadable reports, webinars, and a definitive strategic involvement with social media have just announced the adolescence of content on the web. Streaming video, podcats, skype talk, Facebook activity, Twitter buzz, countless links bookmarked and shared, are only the tip of the iceberg. Are you in there or will you struggle to find your way out of this quicksand of information overload?

The cloud is real; it’s raining now: Fly up to the Cloud

Almost everything is in the cloud now; no exceptions whatsoever. You could hate it or love it but you can’t ignore it. It’s raining applications, programs and services on the cloud and if you haven’t taken to it yet, it might just be too late. Moving to the cloud isn’t the tough part; moving successfully and securely while managing and protecting your data is. For a heads-up, read “5 Devastating Mistakes Companies Make Before Moving to the Cloud[3].  Accounting and finance, sales and marketing, online marketing and management, hiring and human resource management, developing apps and connecting to extended smart devices, operations and process control are only a few of the things that found shelter in the cloud.
